LONDON, UK- I popped into Fernandez and Wells Cafe on a cold and rainy London morning, and was surprised and delighted by the comfortable country style coffee house that I found. In the London world of Starbucks and Pret a Manger, the urban farmhouse feel of the cafe is a lovely retreat. Especially on this small road tucked behind the busy Piccadilly Circus.
The single long narrow room is decorated with light wood and white paneling and dominated by the counter running down the center of the room. The counter displays the wide variety of delicious pastries and sandwiches- including Portuguese custard tarts (do not miss- alone worth the trip!) and a variety of croissants, as well as egg and cheese on a roll made to order. Coffee and expresso drinks are the highlights here, and are sourced from the famous nearby Monmouth Coffee Company. On my constant quest to find the best latte in any town, Fernandez and Wells is a top contender for the London spot of honor.
In this Cafe, seating is limited to countertops and metal stools which line the periphery of the restaurant. Fernandez and Wells has two other restaurants, however: the Food and Wine Bar at 43 Lexington Street, and the Expresso Bar at 16A St. Anne's Court.
