MACAU, CHINA- Hot is one way to describe the day. Humid and disgusting are two others. But my husband and I had departed Hong Kong for a day trip to Macau for one main reason, and my quest for authentic Portuguese eats in the former colony turned gambling haven could not be stopped. I must say, however, that we truly earned this meal.
We departed Hong Kong on the Macau Ferry that morning uncharacteristically mapless and without any particular plan. After taking a stroll through the Wynn Casino (yup, it really is like Vegas in there), and past St. Paul's Cathedral (with a stop for the famous and delicious Macau Portugese egg tarts), I was ready for lunch. So we wandered...for a long time. Up hills, down hills, through winding roads and across town squares. No restaurant seemed to really fit the bill.
Finally, we found A Lorcha. It was crowded even at 2:30pm, which is always a great sign. And it was a perfect choice. White washed walls, green checkered table cloths, and the large space divided by low arches and partial dividers made the restaurant homey and manageable. A Lorcha was casual, laid back and lively.
As always, I closely (and discretely?) observed the food choices of neighboring tables. The cod in cream sauce, the fried clams with garlic, the char-grilled prawns, the grilled octopus salad and the seafood rice all looked excellent. I went with a more boring and basic veal with fries, washed down with a Portuguese beer. It was delicious, filling, and air-conditioned. Win, win, win.
We got lucky, but I highly recommend planning ahead if you want to visit A Lorcha. Hours are limited from 12:30-3:00pm and 6:30-11pm Wednesday to Monday. Because we ate late, we were lucky to get a table without a reservation, but most say that reservations are required for prime time dining.
I left A Lorcha happy that I had held out, in the heat, up and down the hills, and around the winding cobblestone streets for the perfect Portugese meal. I left ready to check-out another Macau casino, but not before snacking on another Portuguese egg tart en route. Yum.
