The Hunt: College Throwback Bars
March 7, 2013
Global – Every week, The Purple Passport team goes out in search of a designated item in whatever city our team members happen to be in at that time. It’s college spring break week, and though we’ve all been hard at work today, we can’t help but reminisce about our shenanigans back in college. So today we’re on the hunt for the best local bars that reminds us of our young, wild, and free days…
The Skinny: My favorite college bars were the offbeat dives—places with hodgepodge décor, a solid selection beers on tap, and a local neighborhood vibe. That’s why High Dive quickly won over my heart after moving to Brooklyn—it’s kitschy (without being dingy) and has a hand-picked mix of mostly domestic beers, plus free popcorn in the back. There’s plenty of room for the local hipster crowd to cozy up to the long bar, plus a patio with outdoor seating. Also, don’t miss the chalkboard bathrooms at High Dive—chalk is included to scrawl your own message!

The Skinny: As college students around the country gear up for spring break plans, nostalgia over school years comes up and has me recalling the college years. While living in Washington, DC, Georgetown University students populated the Georgetown nightlife scenes, making up the majority of patrons at venues like The Tombs. Located on 36th Street, nearby to M Street, walking into The Tombs, you’ll notice everything from the laid-back interior, flowing beers, the student crowd, and music playlists (Journey anyone?) brings you back to those Thursday and Friday nights in college. With Georgetown students on spring break until next week, this might be the weekend to enjoy a quiet, college throw-back at The Tombs.
The Skinny: Whenever I visit my old college town, Drink is one of the bars I always want to go back to. The big leather couches are a comfy place to chill out with friends and play one of the many board games they have on hand. Plus, they have a different drink special every day, including my favorite, $4 mojitos on Wednesday.
