The Hunt – Happy Hour Venues
May 3, 2012
Global – Every week, The Purple Passport team goes out in search of a designated item in whatever city our team members happen to be in at that time. We wanted to share with you, our readers, some of our finds from around the world. This week, we wanted to celebrate the spring weather with our favorite happy hour venues. From a beach club in Abu Dhabi to a rooftop lounge in LA, we love these spots not only because they have great drinks, but also because they allow us to let our hair down in the fresh air. Enjoy!
The Skinny: This rooftop lounge is one of my favorite spots in downtown LA. It’s like a Parisian bistro transplanted amid the skyscrapers! Happy hour here is known as “Apéritif Hour,” with “Le Cocktails” going for $7, French wines going for $6, and hors-d’oeuvres like baked brie, herbed nuts, and truffle french fries all under $10. The stunning views from the terrace and outdoor fireplaces make it a très romantic spot for a sunset drink.
Sea Lounge, Monte Carlo Beach Club, Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi
The Skinny: For cultural and religious reasons, Abu Dhabi isn’t necessarily a happy hour hot spot, but there is some fun to be had as the sun goes down. One of my favorite places to sip a cocktail (or mocktail) as the day turns to night is the Sea Lounge at the new (opened in 2011) Monte Carlo Beach Club. This outpost of the famous Monte Carlo institution affords an extensive drinks menu, sea and pool views, a DJ provided soundtrack, and a perfect place to celebrate the end of the work day or week.
The Skinny: While there isn’t a happy hour special at this irish pub, there are daily beer specials – Domestic Mondays, Local Tuesdays, Irish Sundays, etc. One of my favorite things to do after a long day of work is to kick back with a pint of Guinness and an order of fried banana peppers (yum!) with my dog and babe in tow, sitting outside at one of the picnic tables. (Yes, this is a dog friendly establishment, and with no smoking indoors, it’s also just fine for little munchkins!)
The Skinny: There are a multitude of happy hour specials to choose from in the city, but Terroir Wine Bar still manages to come out on top. In addition to simply having three convenient locations (413 East 12th, 24 Harrison St, 439 Third Ave), they also offer very reasonably $5-6 glasses of wine or beer before six o’clock. Not to mention free sherry, even if it’s not my drink of choice. And when I get a little hungry, there’s an array of innovate bar snacks to hold my appetite off until a later dinner–including an amazing variety of cheeses! Pair all those perks with an intimate space and laid back yet knowledgeable service, happy hour at Terroir is always a joyous occasion.
