Friday Finds: November’s Metropolitan Markets
November 8, 2013
As Christmas nears annually, bazaars of Christmas gifts start setting up shop. The time of year for that, of course, is a ways before That Time of Year (which is, in turn, a ways before Christmas proper), but it seems the mere passing of Halloween this year has got New York, Los Angeles, and London markets’ holiday lights aglow. Our favorite bloggers are on standby to document the creativity at hand.
There’s only one company that would organize a market with “cocktail candy” and a celebrity clairvoyant alongside traditional bags-and-bling fare, and indeed, we’re not surprised that’s what DailyCandy has been doing. This weekend, 376 West Broadway will play host to over 1,000 products and services from the cosmetic, to the domestic, to the purportedly prophetic (you’ll have to ask the psychic directly at her Q & A)—plus a lovely peony-making tutorial with Free Arts NYC. London’s Designers Makers Market at Old Spitalfields Market may be year-round, but its next two occurrences happen in holiday season: one in late December, and one in just over a week. Girl in London’s Cheylene was on deck at the market’s most recent occurrence on the third Saturday of October, where she scoured for textiles, cheeky greeting cards, and handpainted aprons with Sara from KanpaiKanpai and Lucy and Nicci from Fancy-Full. Fresh off its successful bid for a year-round home, the Brooklyn Night Bazaar, formerly a winter-only event, has reopened for good after its 2012 debut. Patrons can expect not only the creative and multicultural food-and-fashion spread (and ping-pong!) that characterized it last year, but a mini-golf course and rock-climbing wall. After a triumphant opening weekend with a show by Spank Rock and kielbasa from Rosamunde Sausage, the market will return to life Fridays and Saturdays from now on. [Gothamist]
LA’s Glendale Galleria just got a heavy-duty makeover, and this weekend’s fashion and beauty market will allow the mega-mall to show off its new goods. From hairdos to henna, cosmetic treats will abound and complement promotional goodies at stores like Bloomie’s. The party starts this Friday, when Porsche Designs freely distributes champagne for evening-hour shopping lubrication. [Racked LA]
