Friday Finds: Spiritual Awakenings
December 6, 2013
December is the time of year when spirits run highest—and rightfully so. The most festive month deserves nothing less than our full celebration, however many glasses of eggnog, hard cider, or hot toddies that may entail. Across our cities, businesses are inviting seasonal cheer and abundant carousal into their homes through innovative and boozy promotions. Our favorite bloggers fill us in on exactly which bars, hotels, restaurants, and shops are most creatively taking a shine to the holiday season. Bottoms up!
Seeking the perfect cocktail for your personality profile and temperament? It’s easy to find it in New York—if you play your cards right. At least, that’s the logic driving The Nomad’s rollout of a tarot-type deck for customers who can’t settle on just one cocktail-menu offering. Not just anyone is privy to the card game, though. The deck itself, like the cards that players pick, is pulled out somewhat at random, so not all customers are offered the cards (and requesting them does not ensure you getting them either). We suppose you’ll just have to return multiple times if you want a crack at taking a pick. [Eater NY]
Not everyone can be in France for the holidays, which is why we’re loving one Parisian business’s clever idea to bring French-style drinking to every door, even distant ones. For USD 250, Paris Wine Company founder Josh Adler ships customers a “seasonal six-pack” of bottles. The shipment comprises strictly artisanal and often natural wine, all of which Adler has personally selected from the terroirs surrounding the City of Light. We’ll drink to that [HiP Paris]
Advent calendars and festive, seasonal spirits are both such hallmarks of holiday festivity it’s a shame, with the former’s youth appeal and the latter’s maturity, they’ve been mutually exclusive. But some of London’s more iconoclastic bars and liquor shops from putting the two together anyway, tradition be drammed. Each day of December at liquor purveyors like Brewdog brings a new drink sample or goody. The doubly festive business promotions have attracted a committed following after creating a buzz, so to speak, in years past. [Londonist]
Coinciding beautifully with the holiday season in question is the opening of Palm Beach’s own “Season,” accompanied as always by the Palm Beach Food & Wine Festival. Five days of epicurian and oenological celebration animate Palm Beach’s best-loved locales, not least Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach; the shops at 150 WORTH, home to Alex and Ani; and The Breakers. At the last is an especially noteworthy occasion for those toasting the holidays: Jeff Simms’s recreation of Savannah, Georgia’s Mercer House, complete with world-class wine pairings to complement the four-course dinner.
