Charmed by old reliable: Morton’s The Steakhouse in West Palm Beach
December 28, 2012
WEST PALM BEACH, USA – We’re in the travel biz, so it doesn’t exactly take a rocket scientist to figure out that we like trying new stuff in new places, be it haggling in a Beijing market, braving the traffic in Los Angeles, or sampling the stinky tofu in Taipei. That said, for all our globetrotting adventures, sometimes we are completely happy to settle for a familiar standby.
So when we find ourselves in Palm Beach, on the hunt for a safe spot to host finicky types like clients or in-laws, we make a beeline for Morton’s The Steakhouse. We know, we know, it’s a chain–but therein actually lies a lot of its charm. Morton’s never lets us down with its cushy, clubby surrounds and seriously big portions of top quality steak. Plus, service is always reliable, if a little canned (watch out for the informative spiel about various cuts of beef, which comes complete with hokey props like Saran-wrapped plates of raw steak). It’s not cutting edge by any stretch, but perfect when we don’t want to risk trendy flourishes that can go terribly wrong.
As in any Morton’s the world over, the vibe is undeniably masculine, and the crowd business heavy; expect lots of sharp-suited execs wheeling and dealing over plates of gigantic chops. We have to admit that we’re usually among those talking business, but it’s also well suited for a special occasion meal with family or a date (there’s always a smattering of lovey-dovey couples in the crowd).
If you’re here for an indulgence rather than deal making, don’t forget to order one of the gorgeous desserts (hot chocolate cake, anyone?)–some need to be requested at the start of the meal because they take so long to make. And if you’re looking for something a bit less indulgent (those massive steaks don’t come cheap, and they’re not necessarily easy on the waistline, either), check out the “Power Hour” drink and food deals in the bar (5:00pm onwards).
The bottom line: swanky yet safe, just like other Morton’s around the world. And we mean that in the best possible way.
