Matchmaking Over Mojitos at Chi-Cha Lounge in Washington, DC
January 31, 2014
WASHINGTON, DC, US – Whether it’s a nosy grandmother or scheming friend, we’ve all been the object of a self-professed matchmaker’s machinations. It’s fairly easy to beg off when Grandma wants you to have dinner with that nice fellow who does her taxes, or your co-worker insists the guy in cubicle 3B is your soulmate. But what if that scheming matchmaker is a nightlife venue?
Yes, that’s right, we’re pretty sure that Chi-Cha Lounge on DC‘s U Street has its sights set on fixing you up with a charming stranger, or at least setting a mood that encourages single mingling. The impossibly sexy space takes its inspiration from Latin America with swanky deep red and orange décor, cushy sofas, and dim moody lighting. As the venue website explains, “The comfortable couches and chairs are grouped together so informally you often become a part of someone else’s conversation.” Sounds like a nudge toward meeting Mr. Right to us!
The Latin tapas and cocktails up the sultry factor. Bites like empanadas, corn fritters, and plantain chips take a note from cuisine of the Andes, while zingy libations like sangria and mojitos set the stage for festive fraternizing, Hispanic style. Buzzy DJs on Friday and Saturday nights spinning Spanish-language music get us in the groove for amor.
As if all of that wasn’t enough to coax us to talk to a cute stranger, Chi-Cha also offers the communal experience of hookah pipes. You can order up a custom-flavored pipe from the hookah bar for yourself and any new acquaintances (wink, wink) you happen to be seated with, lending the feel of an exotic boîte in Marrakesh. Flavors like rose and jasmine are practically aphrodisiacs.
And if you do happen to come with a “cute meet” in mind, there’s a wide range of people to hit it off with. The crowd ranges from off-duty politicos and embassy staff to artsy U Street types to chic 30-somethings. You’re bound to find a least one like-minded match! The possibilities are even greater during the popular happy hour (Monday-Friday from 5:00pm-7:00pm), when locals of all stripes crowd in for USD 4 house cocktails, USD 4 sangria, USD 3 beers, and half-price hookah pipes.
If you’re already part of a couple, don’t feel unwelcome. This is a perfect spot not only for Tinder-wielding singles but also for starry-eyed duos. The lounge is a nice date-night compromise between DC’s more casual pubs and more rowdy dance clubs.
But even if you’re paired off, Chi-Cha will still prod you to take things to the next level. Let’s just say those artful nude paintings on the walls don’t seem like an accident!
