We’re Game at H Street Country Club in Washington, DC
March 14, 2014
WASHINGTON, DC, US – Country clubs are often rarefied suburban spaces, known for their exclusivity and formal conservativeness. DC‘s H Street, on the other hand, is the terra firma of the urban anti-establishment, littered as it is with edgy music venues and hip bars that have risen from the ruins of the formerly blighted enclave. So, it stands to reason that the local “country club”−that would be H Street Country Club−turns the very notion of a country club on its head.
Instead of rolling expanses of golf greens, H Street Country Club sports a funky indoor mini-golf course−the only one of its kind in DC. Adding to the tongue-in-cheek fun are the replicas of DC monuments that punctuate the course. Tipsy hipsters in colored skinny jeans and ironic t-shirts come to tee off en masse whenever the spirit moves them−no reservation is required. It takes about 35 minutes to play and is normally USD 7 a round, but free with dinner on Mondays and Tuesdays.
If mini-golf isn’t your bag, fear not: there are plenty of other competitive diversions. Our personal favorite is skeeball (score!), but shuffleboard, Big Buck Hunter, and Xbox Kinect in the bar area (first come, first served) will also keep you on your toes. For those that prefer their competition sitting down, there are also table-top board games available.
And when the “official” games wind down, there’s ample inspiration for drinking games. The full bar specializes in margaritas, featuring a selection of over 25 tequilas and tasty from-scratch sour mix. Order a pitcher for your table! There’s also a selection of cold beers and tropical-tinged cocktails like mojitos.
All of that gaming and imbibing is sure to inspire your appetite. Luckily, this is no white-tablecloth, country-club-dining-room situation. Instead, the kitchen serves up casual Mexican finger foods like chips and guac, tacos, and nachos that are easily shared and spice up the night.
With relaxed vibes, good eats and drinks, and spirited games, it’s no wonder this bar-cum-arcade is always packed with partying groups in for a special occasion and locals kicking back for a fun night out. When it comes to H Street nightlife, the Country Club truly is a hole in one!
